I had no idea professors wanted us to come to office hours 🥺

I’m thinking about offering Body Doubling Time where we all just get stuff done. We can chat or not, but we’re hanging out while also not procrastinating tasks.

This! I never understood what people did at office hours. Professors told us to come and seemed irritated when we didn’t, but I truly never understood why. I wanted to please, but this shy interest about to just show up with no reason.

So office hours were super intimidating to me when I was an early undergrad! As a high achieving high school student, I was taught/conditioned to just figure it out when I was struggling & not question authority figures. The entire concept of casual conversations with instructors was completely foreign to me! I think even a disclaimer to students that they don't have to be as distant with professors as they may have been with past instructors can be really helpful.

I won’t lie to you, snack incentive for puzzle makers. Or if you have simple tea in your office?

I had a professor that came to one specific dining court weekly to just eat lunch/dinner with us students, exam weeks he’d go twice best thing ever

Teaching on my own for the first time this semester. My office hours attendance as a TA was sparse. This semester, I shared a Canvas announcement that said “reminder office hours are at this time. Come say hi!” I had four students stop by the first week and five the second week. Turns out some students did just want to say hi 😁

I had a coworker that would hold some office hours at the campus coffee shop. It worked great!

it would be so fun if the students that helped you do it got to sign the back, I think there's a way to laminate puzzles

This is the first time I am hearing that profs actually want visitors. I had no idea.

Former high school college prep teacher here - I wasn’t as creative and did a candy jar - also got coworkers to stop by. Or I’d do a “challenge” problem on my whiteboard in my office with a small reward like free 100 on a daily grade. LOVE the puzzle idea!

As a former student, my professors who made office hours feel like a safe place were my favorite professors. One of my profs did an extra credit assignment where you came to office hours for 15 minutes and during that time you had to talk to him about something you think is really cool

Retired professor. At my University, students coming to office hours was viewed by their peers as that the student was failing, didn’t understand the content, or other negative perceptions. So I also listed ways to use the time, like you suggested. Then I made two office visits a semester mandatory to pass the course. Added that to the syllabus and made sure I had plenty of office hour availability. So no one could be singled out negatively because everyone had to sign up and come to office hours. It made a very positive difference.

This is amazing! I always felt like I was intruding when I came to office hours.

Yes!!! Also - a cute option is letting ppl sign/date the back of the last piece! Throughout the years, you’ll have some fun memories!

I don’t know what you teach however, my favorite professors were the ones that had open door for storytime😂 hearing their stories helped me solidify my career choice but also made me seek out certificates and additional specifications in my degree to do certain things within my field.

I feel putting progress pictures of the puzzle will encourage more students to come to office hours too.
I'm gonna steal this idea too, thank you so much!

my professor runs a weekly crafting circle, it seems kind of similar! we just drop in whenever we’re available, and it’s been nice for getting to know other students too :)

it's such a good idea to tell them all the ways that they can use office hours! I assumed office hours were only for people struggling and would make my professors think less of me somehow (like I was too stupid to navigate the course, I guess) and I wish someone had explained to me how not true that was.

When I worked at RISD, I had so many art students with carpal tunnel who were also stressed out. During the winter months, I bought a paraffin hand wax kit and told them to drop by during office hours. It was a hit and they had to wait until the wax dried, so we would chit chat. ☺️

i looove this! i know i would have benefitted from doing more relationship-building with my profs, but i did often struggle to find a “reason” to come and talk to them. i absolutely would have shown up for this!

I put on movies & shows from my childhood! I have a dual chamber office- a little sitting room and then a smaller working space, so I can meet with students one on one about their classwork and then the movies play in the outer room.
