@jos.pham.nguyen.sdb: In December 1946, Portugal celebrated the 300th anniversary of its consecration to the Immaculate Conception. As a special tribute, the revered statue of Our Lady of Fatima was carried in a grand pilgrimage procession from the Cova da Iria to Lisbon. When the procession passed through the town of Bombarral, several white doves were released in honor of Our Lady. To everyone’s amazement, three of the doves flew down and gently perched at the feet of the statue. These doves stayed there for days—refusing to eat or drink, completely undisturbed by the massive crowds, noise, fireworks, and rose petals showered along the route. They remained faithfully at Our Lady’s feet as the statue traveled through villages, even during solemn Masses. One account tells how a dove even landed on the crown during the ceremony! This touching event, often called the “Miracle of the Doves,” deeply moved the faithful. Many saw the three doves as symbols of the three shepherd children of Fatima — or of the theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity. Because of this miracle, it became traditional to depict three white doves at the feet of many statues of Our Lady of Fatima around the world.
