In 2011, I stared down the barrel of a loaded gun held by the man I was married to. I didn’t get there by accident. I got there after every warning sign was ignored. I filed police reports. I went to his command and begged for help. A mental health intervention was attempted and denied, because the commander needed bodies on the line. Nobody listened. Nobody believed me. The plan was to kill me for my military insurance money. I survived. Two teenagers and a female NCO did not. Her death was staged to look like an accident. Today my ex husband is serving life in prison for double homicide and domestic terrorism. And I still carry the weight of knowing those lives could have been saved if command and police had done their jobs. This is your reminder that you don’t always know who you’re married to.
