19 year old Takiyah Babers of California, is facing murder and child-death charges after her 4 month old daughter was found unresponsive inside a dumpster in South Los Angeles. The infant, identified by family members as Luna, was discovered around 10:30pm near the Pueblo Del Rio housing complex. The grandparents also had a long standing relationship with Babers herself. Lacy said she had taken Babers in as a foster child when she was 7 years old and later adopted her. When the grandparents went looking for Luna, they said the explanation they received about the baby’s whereabouts did not make sense. According to police and news reports, Babers allegedly gave conflicting explanations about where the baby was. She reportedly claimed Luna was sleeping, later said the baby had been given to her biological father, and eventually showed an older video that she presented as evidence that Luna was safe. The grandparents reportedly recognized that the video was not current and became increasingly concerned. They provided photographs of Luna to police and news organizations. A person who had discovered the infant reportedly confirmed that the clothing and other identifying details matched those of Luna. Police eventually detained Babers and arrested her on suspicion of murder. Her bail was initially set at $2 million. The case has since moved forward in court. Babers is now charged with one count of murder and one felony count of assault on a child causing death.
