@gray.area.finance: Are you ahead financially in your 40s? Here’s how your salary, savings, investments, pension and debt compare with other people around your age in the UK. These aren’t targets—everyone’s circumstances are different—but you might be doing better than you think. Should I do your 50s next? Not financial advice. #UKPersonalFinance #MoneyInYour40s #UKMoney #FinancialGoals #MoneyTok

Why are people’s pension pots so small? If you’re contributing enough to max out your employer contributions (which is a total no-brainer) then by age 40 you should have at least 2-3x your salary in your pension pot. And you’re going to need it if you don’t want to struggle when you’re older.
1) Aged 32 salary £93k per year.
2) Cash savings £7800 in my Santander Edge Saver. Of which only £4k is earning interest 🤷🏼♂️🙄
3) Investments total portfolio £19,653 but £11k of that is a SIPP.
4) Civil Service pension 🤑
5) Debt - credit card £3700

Those are scary numbers to be honest. How are people going to he able to live? State pension age is going to keep rising but will there really be enough jobs for people to work until they are 70? It just doesn’t seem sustainable if so many people have not been saving properly for retirement

Don’t make the salary but have zero debt so I’d rather be debt free

My pension pot is around 350k, I'm 46. Earning above the median, have no debt (apart from mortgage), around £4.5k in my ISAs (only started this year). I'm on track to retire at 60 I reckon.

38 - £240k salary, savings and investments £0 just liquidated all for a bigger house, pension 450k, zero debt bar 750k mortgage. London numbers though so really not comparable to regions.

What’s is concerning is I’m in excess of all of those numbers (with zero unsecured debt) yet I still feel like I’m just getting by and unprepared for my retirement. How do people survive on earning lower than 44k. Country is screwed.

You forgot equity. You can underperform on all those things but if your house is paid off or nearly paid off that makes a significant difference to your situation.

Interesting figures.. I’d have expected higher averages on savings, investments and pensions to match such a high median wage

I'm 47. I have 4 properties (3 in London, 1 in the Netherlands) and about to buy 1 in the US (where I live) - it completes this month. My household income is nearly half a million dollars, and I have pensions across 3 countries totalling hundreds of thousands of dollars/pounds/euros. I have 4 young kids and an awesome wife in an exec job. Any advice?
