Just some hope core for a second: Something that’s massively changed how I use ai (and my non technical friends) is teaching them how to think about solving problems and what data or processes contribute to that problem. There are some things ai should and shouldn’t be used for, and I find even highly technical people over building things for problems that don’t exist. But for the average person, I’m very bullish that building custom software will be exciting soon, as soon as we have an understanding where it should be applied in our lives. The tech bros are living in their own world of hyper optimization, and I’m just trying to combine all my interests so I can create solutions that help. I’m not technical but ai has helped me help others, and I back companies that build impactful ai solutions. It’s definitely not being talked about, but I’m hopeful we’ll have more of the “average” person feeling empowered by their own problem solving with ai

My hot take for a while has been that work is missing a lot of the mindless tasks it used to have. Tech bros and execs are expecting everyone to always be “on” mentally, and people are TIRED. Sometimes we just need little tasks where we can turn our brain off, and sometimes we need tasks that use more brainpower and creativity.

If my raised productivity at work meant I got to work less, I'd love it. I don't see the benefit of it though, I just get more work. I don't need to be more productive in my downtime either, productivity was never the goal there.

As someone who is both a leftist and in some ways a tech bro, I think the AI industry has the same problem that the establishment Democrats do, which is that they see that the economy looks good on paper (or did until a few months ago) and assume that means that just everyone is doing fine, because AI marketing makes 1,000% more sense if you think that everyone has money to spend on treats and home renovations and vacations

Yes, this is one of the biggest problems with the economy. It’s not just that prices are inflated, but every minutia of life is inflated, and we lowly workers are expected to work endlessly while managing 100 bills. There would be no need for anything to be optimized if the economy wasn’t such a mess to begin with. The endless barrage of emails, texts, push notifications, snail mail, fees on top of fees on top of everything. It leaves everyone with no choice but to go into debt, but the ironic thing is that like… no one really cares, even the people dishing out the debt. They’re just trying to gather whatever they can get. Not to mention, everything is a scam now, which contributes to the overall collective malaise.

The slowest parts of my job are genuinely my favorite. Like when I’m given enough time and peace to really dig into something for a student, or to work on a big, well-researched article. AI slop-ifies everything it touches.

All the tools are designed for coders that have solitary iterative tech tasks with binary answers that can be figured out alone … not people who have jobs that involve winning over humans are designing creative things. It can’t help that workflow.

The rich don’t get the thing we want AI to do for us because they hire human ppl to complete those tasks. Cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. they don’t get why we’d want a robot for that when we can just hire help…. but we can’t hire help….. cause we’re poor…. hence why we’d want the robot to do those things. Kinda like in the jetsons cartoon.

My son loses his mind over this stuff. He’s on self driving cars now. Man, he gets really upset over vaporware. But we batted around a few ideas and came up with a great one. Why don’t we connect a bunch of Waymo cars together and get a BIG engine to pull all the cars? If we can find a way to put them on rails it reduces friction…it could work. I heard they’re trying it out in Boston and New York.

I dunno… There’s a lot of pretty tedious stuff with my job that must get done but isn’t the best use of my time or attention. If AI can handle the boring stuff and free me up to focus on strategy and spending more time with other humans, then I’m game.

I so agree. Plus, if my AI agent is “fighting” corporate AI agents for deals, who wins??? Plus plus, no one is going to pay hundreds a month for these tools, which is what they “should” cost.

The silliest pitch I saw was that a LLM could find you nearby specialists who are in your network and schedule appointments with them. A task that we all know is hard on purpose! A computer from 2012 is perfectly capable of “find nearby practice and then find available spots on my calendar” if our corporate overlords *wanted* it to be easy.

I have been impressed with some things LLMs can do but in this world of data mining there is no way I am going to trust it with information as personal as my inbox contents or in the case of Muse my text chain contents. Be serious!!
