@retrohitstories: Status Quo — “In the Army Now” Status Quo are a legendary British rock band that have been performing since the 1960s. In 1986, they recorded their version of “In the Army Now”, with lead vocals by Francis Rossi and guitar and backing vocals by Rick Parfitt. But here’s the main twist: the song was not written by Status Quo. It was written by Dutch brothers Rob and Ferdi Bolland, who recorded it themselves in 1981 under the title “You’re in the Army Now”. The original song was connected to the Vietnam War and presented military service in a dark, critical way. When Status Quo recorded their version, they changed one important line: the direct reference to Vietnam was removed, changing the wording to “as you wait to land”. (Wikipedia) Francis Rossi had heard the Bolland brothers’ song and believed it could work perfectly for Status Quo. The band transformed it with their own rock sound, and their 1986 version became an international hit, reaching No. 2 in the UK and No. 1 in several European countries.
