I totally grasp what you are saying and it appears many may be offended. The U.S. has an average reading level at and below eighth grade and many of those people attempt to read the KJV and legit think they understand what they are reading. There is most certainly a crisis among us.

I reallly value this perspective and agree. A lot of the Bible isn’t meant to be taken literally and is really just metaphor in some instances. But without that background in studying philosophy, that is commonly, grossly misunderstood

I agree, I feel like this is also why traditions that value education, deconstruction, and critical thinking are generally the smaller denominations, think Episcopalian etc.

OK, I agree with everything you just said, but it’s the way you worded it is going to scare off the people you’re trying to get your message across. You’re basically saying oh I’m smarter than them so you gotta listen to me is where I took this from. I agree with you because you can be a Christian still and have critical thinking and be like there’s parts of the Bible that don’t make fucking sense. Two things can be true.

This is so fair. I’m a Christian, a seminary student, and I have degree in Religious Studies and there are still so many people who think they just clearly know more about it than I do because they have a bible and have been to their church

A lot of catholic priests and nuns have phds I grew up in the Roman Catholic tradition and while I’m no longer practicing because there are things that I disagree with am working through but there is SOOO much that I love and respect— a huge part of it is the emphasis on education and logic, science, reasoning and the humanities. (Of course I’m not including traditional catholic maga traditions that mostly consist of evangelical white supremacist CONVERTS who bring their nasty cult-like mentality to our churches and theology!)

I was raised in the church & left the second I turned 18 because I listened in service and read the book. Then in college I took a bunch of philosophy classes because I was poli sci and that sealed it. Never going back.

I agree as long as the aim isnt one in of the same, producing hypocrisy. Knowledge with no repentance is the same as ignorance with no repentance. Pride is pride, it doesn't discriminate. Knowledge of Christ Jesus that increases love, a tender heart towards obedience and discernment is gold.
