I’m 34, it’s been 20 years. I’m almost ready to admit it.

every woman i know has been at the very least touched without consent. including me. like that’s where our bar is for boundary breaking, incredibly low

It’s also neurologically complex too. Trauma makes your brain do weird things, memories get suppressed or recategorized for the sake of survival. Biologically it’s not even possible to know the extent of what happened for many people.

Mind you police and judges have notoriously not done jack ish for victims with ample evidence and good attorneys. The system literally is against us as a whole.

I was thinking about how, if she HAD said “I was blacked out while they did this,” they would’ve just said “well you were drunk so how would you remember what they did.” Truly no way to win

The brain will want to protect you immediately. Not to mention being hungover, tired, etc., I'm not even reaching the bottom tier of the hierarchy of needs but somehow I'm supposed to wake up the next morning and feel confident in reporting a situation to an institution that is not designed to help us AND at this point I've had to accept both internal guilt and external shame that we've had put onto us. They don't care, though, they will always argue this bs in bad faith.

I remember being told I was sometimes too strict on my boundaries. This was a female THERAPIST WHO SAID THIS.

We are taught from a very young age to just smile and be quiet through uncomfortable things

Also it’s so common for women to be met with doubt and scrutiny when they do report, so they start doubting themselves even more

Boundaries being crossed is so common - I have to interact with the same building doormen and parking garage attendants for my job and I’ve had two of these men HUG me unsolicited. I was so taken aback that I froze and smiled in the moment because what they were doing was so inconceivable. After I was alone and processed their motives I got so angry, but felt like it was too late to put them in their place. Now I feel that anger at both them and myself every day when I have to see them.

I did go to the police and the hospital in the next two days after. Got that kit done, they got the DNA, all of that, and I still didn’t get Justice. The same excuses were made. The same enabling happened.

YEP. And it’s sickening trying to make the men close to you understand this if they don’t already, feels like living with the enemy. It’s terrifying even having the conversation because am I about to find out you’re an op? Ugh.

Yep!! I’m 33 and still processing the SA that happened to me in college. Especially bc it was from a friend I thought I could trust, it’s something I constantly minimize compared to other things that happened to me when it should be the opposite!

Thank you for voicing this. The mental arithmetic is exhausting and constant and I’ve never heard someone articulate it so well.

I remember having an epiphany a few years ago that it was easier to label myself as a “liar” than a “victim” because of all the backlash I got for speaking up a few days after someone I considered a friend SA’d me in high school. It pushed me into denial for YEARS, but deep down, I always knew what happened was wrong. The fight got beat and gaslit out of me so I am very inspired and in awe of Jane Doe because I know how hard it is to do what she is doing. I hope her identity stays safe and that she is protected through all of this madness 💕

yes thank you! I tried explaining this to a comment section full of men saying she said it was consensual so she’s a liar. All it did was cause me stress, these people do not care about women

It took me years before I actually, truly, processed what happened to me, and it wasn't even the big one. I can't imagine what Jane Doe has gone through trying to process what happened to her.
