After nineteen seasons of Hell’s Kitchen, I had a question. I’d watched Gordon Ramsay put chefs through the fire for diners expecting perfection. But I hadn’t seen him invite the homeless and poor in for that same meal. So, Gordon—why not once a month? Set the tables. Open the doors. Give those who cannot afford it the full experience: welcome, menu, service. Something cooked especially for them. Show tomorrow’s chefs that feeding people is the heart of the profession. Welcome to tonight’s imaginary episode of God’s Funny Bone. 😇🔥 ⸻ Gordon arrived in Valhalla expecting a chef’s table. God handed him an apron. “What’s the challenge?” “Dinner.” “For whom?” “All my kids.” Gordon checked the reservations. “Some of these people have no address.” “They’re here for a meal, Gordon. You’re not delivering.” ⸻ Martha Stewart was setting the table when the upper crust arrived. “We usually sit separately.” Dolly Parton took their coats. “Honey, you’re bread. You can share a basket.” Betty Crocker and Aunt Jemima reviewed the menu. “Who’s getting the biggest slice?” asked Betty. “Same people who usually take the cake,” said Aunt Jemima. Hannah Gardner opened her notebook. “And who’s been living on the crumbs?” God pointed toward the dining room. “Tonight, everyone orders from the same menu.” ⸻ The judges took their places. Karma. Vengeance. Ambrosia. Vengeance brought a dish best served cold. Gordon lifted the lid. “How long have you been nursing this?” “Several generations.” “It’s going back.” Karma needed no tasting spoon. “I know what everyone’s been dishing out.” Ambrosia examined the menu. “Plenty of bitterness. Too much flattery. And who decided wealth was a measure of good taste?” Martha quietly removed the gold leaf. ⸻ The first guests came through the door. A man hesitated beside his chair. “Do we have to listen to a speech?” “No,” said Dolly. “Say a prayer?” “If you want to.” “Tell someone how we ended up here?” Hannah closed her notebook. “Only if you want to.” Betty passed him the menu. “What would you like?” He looked down at it. Nobody had asked him that all day. ⸻ A regular customer summoned God. “I’ve spent a great deal of money in fine restaurants.” “I hope you enjoyed your meals.” “Surely that entitles me to something?” “The bill, usually.” “And they’re eating free?” “Yes.” “The same food?” Gordon thundered from the kitchen: “I’M NOT COOKING TWO STANDARDS.” Dolly smiled. “Now we’re getting somewhere.” ⸻ Service began. No second menu. No lesser portions. No good intentions going cold beneath a heat lamp. Martha made each place setting beautiful. Betty and Aunt Jemima made sure nobody had been overlooked. Hannah asked the guests how the food was. Gordon watched his guests enjoy a meal made for them. God stood beside him at the pass. “You wanted to know the challenge?” “I thought it was dinner.” “It is. Once a month, open your doors like this. Let the young chefs see you do it.” “What about the cost?” “Work it out with the same care you give the menu.” Dolly collected another plate. “You’ve taught them how to turn up the heat, honey. Show them how to turn up for people.” ⸻ Karma brought out the final course. “Your Just Deserts.” Vengeance reached for the largest serving. Karma moved it out of reach. “That one’s yours. A taste of your own medicine.” Ambrosia leaned toward Dolly. “Please tell me there’s cake after this.” “There is. Betty’s cutting it.” “Who gets a slice?” “There’s enough for everyone.” ⸻ To be a Master Chef, you must feed all God’s kids in Valhalla. And no one gets sloppy seconds. Everyone gets their Just Deserts. Who sits at God’s table? Everyone. All who seek sustenance have a seat at God’s table. But some get sent to bed without dessert. It usually involves learning better manners before the next seating. 😇 ⸻ Just Tracy, Just ’Cause — Parsimony. Clarity. Virtue.
