@greenbobber: She spent her childhood hiding scars. She spent her career hiding nothing. Cassandra Peterson was born on September 17, 1951, in Manhattan, Kansas. On Good Friday, 1953, she pulled a pot from the stove as a toddler. Third-degree burns covered 35 percent of her body. She spent three months in hospital. The scars stayed. So did the teasing. While other children played with conventional toys, Peterson gravitated toward the outsiders of cinema. Frankenstein. Dracula. The monsters nobody rooted for. She built model kits while her sisters played with dolls. She understood being the thing that didn't fit. A dam project displaced the family to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Then Ann-Margret appeared in Viva Las Vegas, and a direction announced itself. In 1969, days after high school graduation at 17, Peterson drove 12 hours to Las Vegas. She became a showgirl in Vive Les Girls at the Dunes Hotel. There she met Elvis Presley. He told her Vegas was a dead end. He told her to sing. She listened. Peterson moved to Italy, sang lead in an Italian pop band, and landed a small role in Federico Fellini's 1972 film Roma. Back in America, she joined Los Angeles comedy troupe The Groundlings in 1979, working alongside Phil Hartman and Paul Reubens. She developed a sassy Valley girl character and waited for a break that did not come. By 1981, Peterson had turned 30. Hollywood had already begun to write her off. Remember that calculation. That year, local station KHJ-TV in Los Angeles needed a host for late-night horror film screenings. Peterson missed the audition. She was on her honeymoon. Weeks passed. Producers found no one suitable. Peterson walked in, picked up the script, and performed it in her Valley girl voice — dripping sarcasm, mocking every line. They hired her on the spot. The pay was a few hundred dollars a week. She considered it rent money. In September 1981, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark debuted on KHJ-TV. Black gown. Towering black hair. Jokes timed like a standup comic. The show defied easy description, and audiences could not look away. Johnny Carson invited Peterson onto The Tonight Show. The character spread nationally. Then came the negotiation that changed everything. Each time Peterson asked for a pay raise, the station offered a share of the character's intellectual property rights instead. The station expected her to hold out for cash. Peterson kept saying yes. Over time, she acquired controlling ownership of the Elvira character entirely. Every licensing deal, every Halloween costume, every pinball machine, every slot machine, every comic book — the revenue went to Peterson, not to a studio. She starred in Elvira: Mistress of the Dark in 1988 and Elvira's Haunted Hills in 2001. The character became the defining image of Halloween in American popular culture for four consecutive decades. In September 2021, on Elvira's 40th anniversary, Peterson published her memoir, Yours Cruelly, Elvira. At 70, she publicly revealed for the first time that she had been with her partner, Teresa "T" Wierson, since 2002. The book appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list. For 40 years, the world thought it knew her. It had only seen the costume. Cassandra Peterson is 75 years old and still active. The girl who hid her scars built an empire from the things nobody else wanted. The character the industry handed away in lieu of a salary turned out to be worth everything. She took what made her feel like a monster and made it the most iconic costume on earth. Like and share for Cassandra Peterson — the Queen of Halloween nobody saw coming.
