son ㅤ based fatimid caliphate 😍 The First Qarmatian Invasion of Egypt took place in 971 CE, shortly after the Fatimid conquest of Egypt. The Qarmatians of Bahrayn, led by al-Hasan al-A'sam, opposed the expansion of the Fatimid Caliphate into Syria and Egypt. Although both the Qarmatians and Fatimids came from the broader Isma'ili Shi'a tradition, they were rival movements. The Qarmatians also formed an alliance with several Arab tribal groups and received support from opponents of the Fatimids. Before entering Egypt, the Qarmatians achieved a major victory in Syria. In August 971, they defeated the Fatimid army commanded by Ja'far ibn Fallah near Damascus, killing him and taking control of Damascus. They then moved south, captured Ramla, and advanced toward Egypt. Part of their forces remained around Jaffa, while al-A'sam led the main army toward Egypt. Rather than immediately attacking Fustat, the Qarmatians moved into the Nile Delta, where they supported existing anti-Fatimid revolts. This delayed their advance and gave the Fatimid general Jawhar time to prepare the city's defenses. Jawhar constructed a fortified defensive line and trench at Ayn Shams, north of Fustat and the developing Fatimid capital of Cairo, while mobilizing troops from Fustat. The decisive fighting occurred on 22 and 24 December 971 at Ayn Shams. Jawhar's Fatimid forces defeated the Qarmatian army, forcing al-A'sam and his troops to retreat from Egypt toward Palestine. The invasion therefore failed to overthrow Fatimid rule in Egypt, although the Qarmatians retained considerable influence in the Levant afterward. The Egyptian victory allowed the Fatimids to consolidate their control of Egypt, eventually enabling Caliph al-Mu'izz to move his court to Cairo in 973. #fatimid #fatimid_caliphate #fatimids #qarmatians #fyp
