@cookinwithcongress: Why was this orange thing in the White House? Orange Moss, a favorite of Lady Bird Johnson, was the light fluffy dessert du jour in the 1960s “ranch style” White House of LBJ and Lady Bird. She preferred that whenever she was watching her figure, and pecan pie when she was having more fun. I’ll make that one sometime soon too. This vintage recipe, which isn’t straight from Lady Bird but right around that time, has some….questions? Is it supposed to separate? What is mossy about it? Should I do some shag-rug style fondant on top? So many questions, so few answers, so much ORANGE. #recipesoftiktok #USHistory

So because you proposed a question, and I am autistic (if you couldn't tell by the username), I looked up what moss is. Moss puddings were a centuries old tradition of taking Irish red seaweed and using it to thicken puddings (think the traditional way of getting agar agar), this particular variation is a marriage of the American Midwestern obsession with putting things in Jello and this older tradition.

Swish your bananas in orange juice before you add them. Then they won’t turn brown.

people do not understand the hold that Jello had on the US in the 60s and 70s.

Reminds me of 1 2 3 Jello. It was a fun thing to make back in the day. It separated on its own.

Lady Bird was just a nickname. Her real first name was Claudia.

My grandma made this a lot but without the bananas, and she would use melted vanilla ice cream ☺️when I got my wisdom teeth out she made me some with no fruit and I lived on it for like a week.
