Carry That Weight is so powerful. Seeing friends help carry the mattress made me burst into tears. It’s such a visceral representation of the burden other women help shoulder when institutional protections fail. It is heartwarming to see friends step in to share the weight, yet heartbreaking to see the burden spread to more peers the longer it goes ignored by the people with power.

I could see this being a national movement….on the same day if we all did it maybe people would see how many women have had to deal with carrying this weight. Most (including me, almost 40 years ago) don’t say anything because people blame the woman.

At my school they had this event where you could decorate a tshirt about your assault and they would hang it in a chain around a park. I remember someone brought their prom dress and used that instead of a tshirt. The dress was clearly from the early 90’s, late 80’s. I can’t remember what she had all wrote on her dress, but I know it started about the excitement of finding the dress, getting ready for prom, just everything that prom should be. It ended with what happened in the dress. Just seeing the actual dress and that she had held on to it for decades. She was just trying to do what teenagers should be able to do. Someone decided she didn’t get to have good memories of her prom.

I was telling my dad stories from women that had been assaulted even as young as 5 and he got mad and asked where I was finding the stories. It was from my friends and their sisters. He didn’t have anything to say after that.
