@jchristofitness: Weight loss can look different for type 1 diabetics #type1diabetes #type1 #t1d #type1coach Unfortunately the studies on type 1 diabetics and weight loss are not great but they do still give us a glimpse where we can have working theories about what could be different about what happens to our bodies during weight loss. In a 1994 study, researchers compared 28 men with type 1 diabetes with 22 people without diabetes. The type 1 group had a larger exchangeable sodium poolsodium measured across the body, not just in the blood. Within that group, a larger pool was also linked with a higher daily insulin dose. (link.springer.com) Another study raised insulin in six people without diabetes while keeping blood sugar normal. Their kidneys released less sodium during the insulin infusion. That supports a possible connection between insulin and sodium retention, but it doesn’t tell us how much anyone’s scale weight will change. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) Here’s my working theory from connecting these studies with what I’ve seen over years of coaching people with type 1: for some people, sodium and water shifts may help explain why the scale jumps or appears stuck even while they’re making progress. More carbohydrates can also increase stored glycogen and its accompanying water. A salty meal can change fluid balance. Menstrual-cycle changes can affect scale weight too, although we can’t assume the luteal phase causes sodium retention for everyone. (journals.physiology.org, onlinelibrary.wiley.com, pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) So before a single weigh-in convinces you that your fat loss has stalled, look at your weight trend over several weeks alongside your carbs, sodium, cycle, and routine. The scale measures everything you’re carrying that day, including water. Save this for the next time the scale tries to fake you out. Coach J 🫡❤️

I’ve noticed the male type 1’s seem to do exceptionally well with gym gains etc whereas a lot of the females struggle esp with weight loss. Also doesn’t help in my case when you have hypothyroidism at the same time

So when I have to take the insulin I’ve been told by medical professionals that it makes you put the weight ON because my body isn’t absorbing it, is that right? Or did I get that wrong? T1D here since Feb 2025
