12 is the correct answer bc the others are just the same key written differently. And if you’re going to count minor, why not melodic and harmonic minors to make it 60 keys? And if you’re counting those, why not Dorian, Mixolydian, etc…

12 is the correct answer, even relative minor and major is still the same key 😂. Victor you are a goat bass player but this logic, i dont need this negativity in my life

But like… he’s counting Gb and F# as separate keys, as well as C# and Db. Which are written differently, but your hands do the same thing. So when you practice in Gb and then in F# are you practicing anything different??

On piano, guitar, bass (and in casual use on all other instruments), there's 12 notes that each have a major and minor key.
The way you count it, Ab Major and G# Major are counted as separate keys.
Are they different on some instruments? Yes.
But to make a distinct, defined number, you have to stop counting somewhere. And if you count G# and Ab as different, you can also count B#, Fb or E# as distinct keys, which gives you more than thirty.
How you approach this is up to you, but going "24 is wrong, this is 2nd grade math" is extremely disingenuous.

Folks saying he’s wrong because some keys are actually enharmonic equivalents or because the term “minor key” is just shorthand for the Aeolian mode, meaning it isn’t a separate key, are missing the point. Victor is a music teacher through and through, he consorts with Berklee professors and great musical minds regularly, and he’s one of the most accomplished bassists of our time. He’s well aware of whatever point you’re making and could probably make it better than you could. He’s trying to clear up a concept often obfuscated by inept and dispassionate teaching. His whole pedagogy is to experience first and learn the theory second. You’re welcome to argue his points; but first try to walk into any club, into any church, or onto just about any stage and, when told we’re playing in E minor, try telling the head honcho that there’s no such thing as a minor key. Try telling it to a band teacher. Try telling someone who cares. Ultimately, this is all nomenclature assigned for the purpose of helping people understand and speak a common language, and he’s trying to help folks with something that constantly trips up newcomers and novices by speaking in terms of rules of thumb. He isn’t wrong- he’s redefining things to make them more approachable. Mark of a good teacher.

I'd argue that there's 105 keys because minor is technically a mode so he's only accounting for major and minor modes but there's still all of the other modes that need to be taken into account. Just because a minor mode is used more than say a dorian mode doesn't mean that it's any different. So using the logic of 15 key signatures ・7 for each mode gives you 105 keys. A key signature with 2 sharps is just as much of an E dorian key signature as a B minor signature we just don't refer to them like that because they're not common enough for it.

fair enough - but telling people "this is simple stuff you guys" when you're giving people probably an entirely new way to think about music isn't an effective way to teach. There will be people in that crowd that could have got there but were switched off by that framing

Nobody in the comments understands what he is actually talking about. He just gave you a blue print for only having really memorize the 7 natural keys. Every sharp or flat version follows a simple +7 sharps or -7 flats formula to find every other key signature. This is an elite shortcut for beginners to the circle of fifths, the order of sharps and flats, and key signatures.

I don't care about the argument in the comments about the number of keys. I just appreciate the quick way to figure the flats on keys I'm not as familiar with.

The reason there are 12 unique major keys is because some of the 15 are enharmonic to each other. C# and Db are the same scales but with a different key signature. They are written differently but played the same. No need to practice each separately. So there are 12 major keys to practically play but 15 to understand for reading sheet music
