@tlcwithmsb: Kids are forced to be in school, the least we can do is feed them. The data speaks for itself. #food #lunch #teacher #kids #parents @A Better MN
Seems like an easy fix, if you think rich folks should be paying more into the system, tax 'em at a higher rate to make up for it. And all kids still get to eat

Lunch Lady in Mankato here. The kids at my school are so appreciative of the food that we serve them. We have a table in the lunchroom where if there is food that a kid didn't want, they can drop it there and any kid who comes by can get that extra food. No judgement.

It costs too much for us to buy school lunches. We are stuck in that spot where we make too much for lunch assistance but not enough to be able to afford to pay full price. My kids take a lunch from home. It’s much cheaper that way.

I haven’t done the math on how much of my taxes that I personally pay are allocated for school lunches, but I did do the math on how much goes into SNAP and Medicaid benefits and when I was making six figures, it was like $35-$40 per year. I would imagine that the amount that would be allocated to go to school lunches would be a lot lower and I genuinely don’t understand how anybody could be mad about that small of an amount out of their income going to feed people who need it.

And the ROI on society for paying to have nourished kids who can actually learn is WELL worth $1 per day

sometimes the affluent kids need food just as much as other kids. I've met a lot of kids whose families are so busy being successful, that they neglect the basics like having food in the refrigerator.

I don’t care if a parent makes millions, that does not mean they care for their child and that child still deserves food

When I was a dumb*** teen, I had an old Camaro. I went to the U of M (Twin Cities). I had to run inside one of the buildings & drop something off, so I double-parked & ran in. Came out & my stupid sports car was stuck in the snow & I couldn't pull out. I *immediately* had 5-8 students behind my car pushing me out w/o even asking for help. That's Minnesota

Parents who don’t have to buy groceries for school lunch uses that money for other things to stimulate the economy.

This tracks every single interaction I’ve had with Minnesotans online has been so positive & just amazing. And oddly enough I overwhelmingly follow folks from MN. And one day I will move there to be with my people. Because I’ve always been odd man, well odd woman out, in my state of Tennessee. Since I was a child I’ve had “parent teacher” conferences about my opinions. And that carried over into my work life. I just don’t think like the people in my state. I think all kids should eat & never be singled out as the kid who can’t afford it. Because perception matters especially when you are a child. And a child is not to blame for their parents financial situation.

A friend told me about her VERY traumatic childhood. I asked how on earth did you stay in school, what kept you going? She said “they fed me”. She graduated because that’s where she could get fed. 🥺

No kids should be hungry ever and all kids should be fed in schools. My kids are done with school and I will still die on this hill.

Every kid should get fed. That policy prevents weird oversights in policy that prevents us from feeding everyone that we compel to be in school all day. We should offset that policy with taxes on the wealthy, and there you go, any “undue” benefit that may theoretically occur is solved

as Walz said- paraphrasing- the argument about haves and have nots should not be worked out in a school lunchroom.

I would think it also reduces stigma on getting a free lunch.

idgaf who gets the food. we pay so much for everything its insane that theres exclusions. you dont know what Richie Rich's homelife is. sure his parents might make 400k annually but they dont buy groceries for Richie to make his own lunch or they are abusive and withhold access to food. I had a friend in hs that his father was doing that because "hes a man and real men dont need to eat lunch" or some machismo bs like that. i split my lunch with him multiple days a week, usually on days i only had half scheduled (block schedule with zero period, every other day I got out at 12:30 and would leave after lunch) bc i had access to food at home and kevin did not.

not a from Minnesota. but as a country boy in PA if I make too much food or grow too much for myself. I'll give it away I have my vegetable garden for fun and something to take care of. but there's only so much I can use. if i know of someone that can use any of it they're free to take what they need. I'm more offended when someone says no to my offer, then if they take it and toss it later.

My kids are in MN schools. Having food available for free at school has really helped us. One kid ALWAYS eats at school so we stock favorite foods at home. Other struggles to eat at lunch (overstimulated) so if needs to eat later, can grab a snack. Both have been doing so much better with free lunch.

I’m in TX my church supports a local elementary school and we offered to pay school lunch debt and that school told us “ our sister school has a bigger debt problem. “ so we paid off that school’s and few others it wasn’t a lot but still no kids should go hungry
