Fun fact: The US and the rest of the world called the footwear 'thongs' as recently as the 90's until the g-string became popular and took over the term. 'Flip-flops' (stupid word) only existed from then on.

what Kiwis call Jandals is what Aussies call thongs which was originally a brand name of the Jandals in the 80s yet nearly everywhere else calls them flip flops because of the sound that they make they became popularised through New Zealand in the early 80s which was then taken around the world via Australia but the true origins come from Japan and the word that kiwis use is made up from Japanese sandals (Jandals)...

Actually when I was growing up in Southern California. They were also called thongs and you were definitely wearing the black pair with the blue and black straps.
