TO THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO BUILD OUR FUTURE — HAPPY WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY Today, I celebrate the men and women who do one of the most important jobs in our society: *teaching, nurturing and shaping the next generation. To every teacher in Oshodi-Isolo, across Lagos State and beyond, I say thank you. I speak to you today not simply as a politician, but as one of you. As the former Education Secretary of the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Education Authority, I had the privilege of working closely with our schools, Head Teachers and teachers. I walked through our schools, listened to your concerns and witnessed, first-hand, the dedication and sacrifices you make every day. I understand your work because I have seen it. I understand your challenges because I have listened to you. And I understand your importance because I have seen the difference you make. Every morning, you enter classrooms carrying much more than lesson plans. You carry the hopes of parents, the dreams of families and the future of our communities. You teach children from different backgrounds, encourage those who are struggling, discipline when necessary, inspire when hope is fading and sometimes become counsellors, mentors and even surrogate parents. And you do all these things knowing that the reward for your effort may not come immediately. A child may forget the exact lesson you taught, but may never forget the teacher who believed in him or her when nobody else did. That is the power of a teacher. There is a profound truth in the words often attributed to Henry Adams: “ *A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” That is why I firmly believe that *no community can rise above the quality of the people it produces, and teachers are at the very heart of producing those people. My dear teachers, your welfare, professional development, working conditions, teaching resources and legitimate demands must continue to receive the attention they deserve. We cannot continually ask teachers to build the future while neglecting the people who are building it. As I seek the opportunity to represent Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly on the platform of the APC, I want you to know that my commitment to education did not begin with politics, and it will not end with politics. I have served with you. I have listened to you. I have seen your sacrifices. I know your value. Therefore, when I speak about education, I do not speak from a distance. I speak from experience and from conviction. To every Head Teacher, teacher, education officer and every member of the education family contributing to the growth of our children, please remember this: your work matters, your sacrifice matters, your voice matters and your future matters. The child sitting quietly at the back of your classroom today may become tomorrow's doctor, engineer, entrepreneur, professor, leader or legislator. Long before society celebrates that achievement, a teacher would have planted the seed. So, on this special day, I salute you. I honour your patience. I celebrate your resilience. I appreciate your service. And I encourage you to keep inspiring, keep nurturing and keep believing in the children entrusted to your care. You are not merely teaching children. You are building the people who will build our communities, our state and our nation. May God continue to strengthen you, reward your sacrifices and bless the work of your hands. Happy World Teachers’ Day to all our teachers in Oshodi-Isolo, Lagos State and beyond! With deepest respect and gratitude, Hon. Mayowa Alakija (BIBIRE) APC Candidate, Lagos State House of Assembly Oshodi-Isolo Constituency 1
