Incurable Cancer Diagnosis | Part 6 Brain surgery goes wrong. Having been through open brain surgery (craniotomy) a few months after diagnosis with secondary breast cancer when the disease spread into my brain I spent that next year recovering from brain surgery and radiation. (Cyberknife) which took place in London as devastatingly we do not have a cyberknife machine anywhere in Scotland at present so whole brain radiation is the only NHS option. I wouldn’t be alive without the treatment I had privately it’s so bloody wrong and I don’t hide that fact. In fact I’ve channeled most of my life since diagnosis into setting up charities in the breast cancer field to try and implement positive change for others facing a diagnosis. When 12 months after the first brain tumour I was told it was back in my brain. I thought that was it. I didn’t know how my body would get through more brain surgery but I took peace in at least knowing what to expect this time in terms of the surgery, shaving my hair, the wound cutting me from ear to ear and the inability post op to do things like basic spelling! Unfortunately this time around things took a turn for the worse and there was a malfunction in the operating theatre with the ‘sat nav’ style piece of equipment that locates the tumour and they hit the main vein in my brain. I almost bled out and lost my life but the team fought hard for me. The recovery after that was hell. The wound on my head wouldn’t heal, I developed sepsis and kept getting rushed back into theatre to have the head wound removed stitched. I was fighting for my life but I kept picturing my son and I honestly believe that’s what got me through. No rest for the wicked though as it was straight back onto chemotherapy but I hope this gives some hope to anyone facing similar.
