@the2minutenovelist: He asked for more gruel. By morning, they were paying people to take him away. 🥣 Oliver Twist — Charles Dickens Oliver is nine years old, starving in a workhouse run by very well-fed men. He asks for a second bowl of gruel, and the adults in charge decide he's a dangerous child. He's sold to an undertaker, runs away to London, and lands in the "care" of Fagin, an old showman who runs a school for young pickpockets. Everyone Oliver meets tries to turn him into something: a pauper, a mourner, a thief. He keeps refusing. And the one person in Fagin's gang who notices is a young woman named Nancy. Oliver Twist is usually remembered as the story of a sweet orphan who gets rescued. But Oliver isn't really the one who does the rescuing. It's Nancy, someone the world already turned into exactly what it's trying to make Oliver become. She sees herself in him, and she has to decide what that's worth. Dickens wrote it to make his readers furious at how the powerful treated poor children. Nearly two hundred years later, the part that still hits hardest is what one person chooses to do when nobody else will. 👇 Who's the most underrated character in a classic novel?
