Significant flooding is already happening and unfortunately things are about to get much worse. 30 Trillion Gallons are forecasted to fall across the US over the next 72 hours. Here’s how I calculated it. The nearly 30 TRILLION gallons estimate comes from NOAA’s Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS), a high-resolution weather model currently running in its pre-operational phase. Using forecast files from NOAA’s NOMADS data service, I multiplied predicted rainfall depth by the land area of each model grid cell across the U.S., then converted the combined volume to gallons. The result: approximately 29.1 trillion gallons of rain, excluding snow and ice, over the September 29, 18Z run’s 72-hour forecast ending October 3 at 2 a.m. EDT.
