Wasilla, Alaska — Former Republican state lawmaker David Eastman says FBI agents interviewed him about an alleged political recruitment operation involving Alaska's 2026 Senate election. Eastman told Fox News that a man he later identified as Democratic operative Jerid Kurtz approached him in April, pretending to represent conservative donors and encouraging him to run for the U.S. Senate. "He pretended to represent conservative donors and was looking for conservative candidates to run for federal office; none of which was true," Eastman said. Eastman said the recruiter did not mention Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan or disclose any plan to confuse voters during their meeting. The controversy involves retired teacher Dan J. Sullivan, whose name closely resembles that of incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. He appeared on the ballot alongside Democrat Mary Peltola and Republican Gerald Heikes. Reports by The New York Times alleged that operatives connected to Peltola's campaign helped recruit candidates to draw votes away from the incumbent. Peltola has denied trying to deceive voters. The controversy has prompted a congressional investigation. On October 29, House Oversight Chairman James Comer requested that Kurtz appear for questioning on November 6. "As a Democrat operative who was allegedly tasked with assisting in this effort, you have information that will assist the Committee's investigation," Comer wrote. "If you do not voluntarily appear for the interview, we will be forced to evaluate the use of compulsory process," he warned. Eastman also said he received campaign mailers that presented the other Dan Sullivan as the real or only Sullivan in the race. Meanwhile, legal questions are emerging over whether deliberately misleading voters through similar candidate names could violate federal law. However, no court has established that a crime occurred. The FBI interview does not mean anyone has been found guilty, and investigators have not publicly established that the alleged operation changed the election outcome.
