The point people are missing is simple: if the prosecution cannot prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, the law requires the defendant to receive the benefit of that doubt. That matters to every one of us. If investigations become lax and law enforcement can rely on accusations, opinions, or incomplete evidence instead of thoroughly investigating, innocent people can suffer devastating consequences. If I were accused of a crime, I’d want the investigation to be thorough, impartial, and evidence-based. And if I actually committed it, I’d expect the evidence to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, and I should be held accountable. Due process isn’t about protecting criminals. It’s about protecting citizens from being convicted without sufficient evidence.
