David Nweze Umahi was born on July 25, 1963, in Umunaga, Uburu, Ebonyi State. He studied Civil Engineering and graduated in 1987. WHAT WAS HE DOING AT 25? At 25, Umahi was not a politician. He was a young civil engineer building his professional career, gaining experience in engineering, construction, water and infrastructure projects. Around 1990, he also moved further into the engineering and construction business. FROM ENGINEER TO POLITICIAN Umahi later rose through the PDP structure in Ebonyi, becoming the party's state chairman. He served as Deputy Governor from 2011 to 2015 before becoming Governor in 2015. He was reelected in 2019 and served until 2023. HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH NWIFURU Francis Nwifuru's political relationship with Umahi developed during Umahi's rise in Ebonyi politics. Nwifuru eventually became a member of the State House of Assembly and was elected Speaker in 2015, remaining in the position for eight years. Ahead of the 2023 election, Umahi publicly backed Nwifuru as his preferred successor. Nwifuru secured the APC ticket, won the election and became Governor of Ebonyi State on May 29, 2023. Because of Umahi's influence and support throughout Nwifuru's political journey, he has often been described as Nwifuru's political godfather. Nwifuru has also referred to Umahi as his father and boss. Umahi's own journey continued after the governorship. He became Senator representing Ebonyi South and was appointed Minister of Works in 2023.
