The Mangbetu people of Central Africa, particularly in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, became well known for a traditional practice of deliberate skull elongation called Lipombo. The custom involved gently binding an infant’s head with cloth during early development, when the skull bones were still flexible, to encourage a longer, more elongated appearance. For the Mangbetu, this distinctive head shape was associated with beauty, social status and cultural identity. The practice was especially visible among members of the ruling class and elite families, and it became a recognizable feature in historical photographs and European accounts of the region during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The resulting shape was sometimes further emphasized through elaborate hairstyles, with hair arranged around a woven framework to create a taller silhouette. Mangbetu artists also incorporated elongated heads and distinctive hairstyles into pottery, carved objects and musical instruments, preserving these ideals in their artistic traditions.
