Majlis Perbandaran Selayang also has formal rules governing liquor-related activities and has previously taken action against businesses selling alcohol without the necessary approval. But beyond the legal question, the situation highlights a bigger issue for neighbourhood businesses: how much should community preferences influence what a retailer chooses to sell when the product itself may be legally permitted? In this case, 99 Speedmart chose to respond to local sentiment rather than wait for enforcement or a bigger confrontation. And that says something important about retail: a shop does not operate in isolation from the people living around it. Sometimes the strongest pressure on a business is not a new law or government order — it is whether the surrounding community accepts what that business is doing.
