@apahomeinspections: A repair can look secure and still fail to support the structure. During this live crawl space inspection beneath an older home, I found beams that had been sistered to an existing beam and nailed in place. But the added beams were not properly supported at the ends or through the center. Without adequate bearing and support, simply nailing a beam alongside another may not provide the structural reinforcement the repair is meant to provide. Homeowners should ask questions when a repair looks incomplete, and have structural concerns evaluated by a qualified professional.
