my theory is its because of insecurity that our parents chose to not teach us basic cultural fundamentals. my mother specifically enjoyed being "the smartest in the room" over dumb shit like recipes & proper Spanish words for things. her world was that small, where correcting my pronunciation made her day brighter instead of realizing she failed at raising a child rich with our culture. as an adult, I run laps around my mother over everything she refused to teach me & the things I taught myself that she still doesnt understand.

Lmao my second grade teacher taught me how to dance salsa bc my Puerto Rican parents were very much with the “pon aceite en mi lámpara señor” 😩😩😂

I bought the “My Dominican Cookbook” to learn how to make certain recipes because my mom always kicked me out of the kitchen. Same with dancing, “you can't dance” you didn't let us go to parties!!

we didn’t partake in anything mexican, got made fun of by my parents for listening to cumbias and rancheras. was only taught how to make beans and rice, can’t dance etc. now that i’m older i get accused of not having mexican pride like excuse me i tried and yall made fun of me 😭

Yesss. Last Christmas party my mom was making fun of me for not knowing how to dance salsa, merengue, etc. like we stay at home bc my parents were always working and we have no family here. I told my mom who was gonna teach me? She looked so surprised

bro i literally grew up in el paso 5 miles from the border and my mom struggled so much with the pressure to assimilate that she never taught me how to speak, dance, or cook either. granted she saw what the trump admin is doing from a mile away, but still, i feel so disconnected from my own life 😭

Tiktok has thought me how to cook more Mexican dishes than my own mother. And dont get me started on dancing, we barely went to 2 quinceañeras and only because my brother and I were a part of the court but no I don't know how to dance 😭 and then they hit you with "En mis tiempos yo así esto y estos.."

My dad tried embarrassing me telling someone I’m a no sabo. I said tell ‘em why. My dad had to learn English for his job. He took classes at my elementary school and we were told only speak to him in English. He conveniently forgot that part.
