If someone with bipolar disorder sent you this video, there’s probably a reason. Bipolar disorder is so much more complicated than being “happy one minute and sad the next.” It is a mental health condition involving episodes that can cause significant changes in mood, energy, activity, sleep, thinking and behavior. Bipolar depression can look like extreme exhaustion, isolation, loss of interest, difficulty concentrating, struggling with basic tasks, canceling plans, not responding to messages and feeling disconnected from the things and people you normally love. Mania or hypomania can look completely different: needing less sleep, having unusually high energy, talking faster, racing thoughts, increased confidence, impulsivity, irritability, spending money, starting new projects or making decisions you normally wouldn’t make. Some people with bipolar disorder can also experience mixed features, when depressive and manic or hypomanic symptoms overlap. But here’s something incredibly important for partners, friends, family members and coworkers to understand: a person with bipolar disorder is not experiencing symptoms every second of every day. There can be long periods of stability between episodes, and not every emotion is a bipolar symptom. We can be excited without being manic. We can be tired without being depressed. We can be angry without having an episode. If you love someone with bipolar disorder, one of the most helpful things you can do is learn what THEIR bipolar disorder looks like. Ask about their early warning signs. Ask what helps during bipolar depression. Learn what hypomania or mania looks like for them. Encourage professional treatment and healthy routines without trying to become their doctor. Most importantly, continue seeing the person underneath the diagnosis. If someone sent you this video, they probably aren’t asking you to completely understand what bipolar disorder feels like or to fix it for them. They may simply be saying: “This is part of my life, and I need you to understand me a little better.” Save this for someone who needs it, or send it to someone you’ve struggled to explain bipolar disorder to. #bipolardisorder #bipolar #bipolarawareness #MentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness
