Around 87% of American teenagers own an iPhone, and many of them may remain Apple customers for years. Among adults, switching away from the iPhone can be surprisingly difficult once they’re deeply connected to Apple’s ecosystem. That’s not an accident. Over the past two decades, Apple has built an ecosystem designed to keep customers coming back, from iMessage and FaceTime to the Apple Watch, AirPods, iCloud, and the App Store. So how did Apple create a system where millions of people buy an iPhone and rarely leave? The answer is fascinating, and if you’re an iPhone user, parts of it might even frustrate you. This is why everybody owns an iPhone.
