A man borrowed a thousand dinars with no witness and no guarantor โ€” only Allah. When no ship could take him home in time, he sealed the gold inside a piece of wood and gave it to the sea. When asked for witnesses, he said "ูƒูŽููŽู‰ ุจูุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ุดูŽู‡ููŠุฏู‹ุง" โ€” "Allah is sufficient as a witness." When asked for a guarantor, he said "ูƒูŽููŽู‰ ุจูุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูƒูŽูููŠู„ู‹ุง" โ€” "Allah is sufficient as a guarantor." The lender agreed. He travelled by sea; when the debt fell due, he could find no ship. He hollowed out a piece of wood, placed the thousand dinars and a letter inside, sealed it, and threw it into the sea, entrusting it to Allah โ€” and still kept searching for a ship. The lender went to the shore hoping a ship had brought his money, found the piece of wood, took it home as firewood, split it, and found the money and the letter. Later the borrower came with another thousand dinars. The lender asked whether he had sent anything; he said he had found no ship before. The lender said: "Allah has delivered on your behalf what you sent in the wood," and told him to return with his thousand dinars, rightly guided. The opening hook and the closing reflection are our own; the story itself follows the hadith. โ€ข The line that the borrower did not know whether the wood had arrived is our reading of the narration, as he brought a second thousand dinars and did not claim to have sent the first. โ€ข If you notice any error, please let us know in the comments and we will correct it, in sha Allah.
