@fcvfd725: My Hero, "I cannot help but think that great results would have been obtained had my views been thought better of; yet I am much inclined to accept the present condition as for the best." — James Longstreet (1821–1904) a career U.S. Army officer who became one of the most important Confederate generals during the American Civil War. Born on January 8, 1821, in Edgefield District, South Carolina, Longstreet graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1842. He served with distinction during the Mexican-American War, where he was wounded at the Battle of Chapultepec. When the Civil War began in 1861, Longstreet resigned his U.S. commission and joined the Confederate Army. He quickly rose through the ranks and became one of General Robert E. Lee's most trusted corps commanders in the Army of Northern Virginia. Lee reportedly referred to him as his **"Old War Horse."** Longstreet played major roles in several of the Confederacy's most important campaigns. He fought at **First Bull Run**, **Seven Pines**, and the **Seven Days Battles**, and was instrumental in the Confederate victories at **Second Manassas** and **Fredericksburg**. During the **Maryland Campaign of 1862**, his corps fought at Antietam. At **Gettysburg in July 1863**, Longstreet commanded the First Corps and was responsible for a major portion of the Confederate army's operations on the second and third days of the battle. He expressed reservations about attacking the strong Union position on Cemetery Ridge, but ultimately carried out Lee's orders. His corps participated in the assault later known as **Pickett's Charge** on July 3. In the autumn of 1863, Longstreet at his on request was sent west to reinforce the Confederate Army of Tennessee. His troops played a major role in the **Battle of Chickamauga**, one of the Confederacy's most significant victories in the Western Theater. He later commanded Confederate forces during the **Knoxville Campaign**. Longstreet returned to Virginia in 1864 and served under Lee during the **Overland Campaign**. He was seriously wounded at the **Battle of the Wilderness** on May 6, 1864, when he was accidentally shot by Confederate troops while leading his men near the front lines. The wound temporarily removed him from active command. After the war, Longstreet became one of the most controversial former Confederate generals. Unlike many former Confederates, he supported **Reconstruction** and became politically aligned with the Republican Party. He served as a U.S. diplomat and held several government positions, including service as a U.S. Marshal in Georgia. Longstreet died in **Gainesville, Georgia, on January 2, 1904**, at the age of 82. His military reputation became heavily debated after the war, particularly because former Confederate supporters such as Jubal Early criticized his actions at Gettysburg. Modern historians generally recognize Longstreet as one of Lee's most experienced and capable corps commanders. #fyp #civilwar #jameslongstreet #gettysburg #hero
