I think it could have been a combo of both. Her stepmother might have been sensitive and was picking up psychically on her energy and where Maria was buried. She could have astral traveled in her dream and saw the location or Maria guided her to the location in her dreams. But she was definitely guided whether it was through her own intuition or a message from Maria.
