German tanks equipped with large Maybach V-12 engines, such as the Panther and Tiger series, commonly featured an inertia starter as a reliable method for starting the engine. This system involved a crew member inserting a hand crank into a rear socket and spinning a heavy flywheel up to high speed through reduction gears. Once sufficient momentum built up, a clutch engaged to transfer the flywheel's energy to the engine's crankshaft, turning it over to start the vehicle. The process was physically demanding and often required two men working together, especially in cold weather when thick oil and weak batteries made electric starters unreliable. Although many of these tanks also had electric starters, crews frequently preferred or relied on the hand-cranked inertia method as the primary or backup option. It conserved battery power, reduced wear on the electrical system, and ensured the tank could still be started after long periods of inactivity or in harsh conditions on the Eastern Front. Modern demonstrations of restored vehicles still showcase the distinctive high-pitched winding sound as this flywheel spins up before the powerful Maybach engine roars to life.
