Cells such as neutrophils and macrophages detect microorganisms or foreign particles, approach them, and extend their membrane until they completely surround them. The invader becomes trapped inside a vesicle called a phagosome, which later fuses with lysosomes. Enzymes and other substances then break down and destroy the captured material.
