Here’s a story about educating boys: when I was in law school, some of us would go to schools to teach kids about consent and about what the law in Canada says about consent. It was pretty basic - the message essentially being anything other than an enthusiastic yes should not be considered consent without further inquiry, and that women and girls do not invite sexual contact because of what they are wearing, where they are located, or because they are intoxicated - they are not responsible for being sexually assaulted. The kids for the most part were receptive, maybe a bit confused about why we were there, but I never got the sense that they were resistant to the message. The TEACHERS on the other hand… they either sat silently and refused to engage or aggressively pushed back, often arguing that girls DID in fact contribute to their own assaults by dressing *provocatively* or getting drunk and that they really should take more responsibility and not do these things if they didn’t want to be SA-ed. It was pretty eye-opening. Here we were trying to educate kids, which, according to the scolds, is what is needed, but when the actual educators undermine the message, it is abundantly clear that the issue isn’t lack of education, but rather the existence of a deeply entrenched r*pe culture that is perpetuated by people in positions of authority. Literally nothing has changed.
