@hayyyfarms: Unfortunately, despite popular belief, rabbits cannot thrive on just plain old lawn grass - especially if you want them to be productive! Forage-based diets are complicated and involve being knowledgeable about the nutrient contents of the varieties you’re feeding. You have to be able to create a well-rounded diet, consistently, and in large enough quantities that you can collect it year-round or store it over the winter, if needed. This is a big reason why most rabbitries, including myself, rely on pelleted feeds to provide that nutrition. It’s not as simple as just throwing them out on the lawn! 🐰 #meatrabbits #rabbitry #rabbitsoftiktok #bunnytok #homestead

all animals need different nutrients, even herbivores. it's wild to me that people genuinely think some animals can just chew grass and nothing else at all. thats how koalas are made. you dont want animals to become koalas.

Rabbits stomachs are so sensitive too. If their food changes suddenly, they can just die

my family has raised rabbits for a very long time before television was even a thing, we had clover and cabbage and grasses like gooseweed and the long one that has runners underground, potatoes too I believe, and corn, the bunnies were doing great, I wonder how diverse the feed has to be mate, would love seeing you give an example of a full diet so to speak

rabbits could live off only grass the same way humans could live off only bread. Not fun, but surviving. Barely.

Works fine for heritage breeds with lower productivity. Just feed them a little bit of everything and supplement with oats when they give birth. And grass dries to hay, which you store during winter. Most of usa hardly has any winter to speak of anyway so you dont need much hay if its just rabbit meat for your family. People have done it this way since forever.

Do they make rabbit multivitamin powder? Then you could just mix that into their hay or water.

Are their any animals you didn’t butcher because you developed an emotional connection to them? Do you name and of the larger animals that you plan on keeping longer?

I swear so many people think that meat rabbits can survive on the hey. They said their pet bunnies that lived 46 months, or that you can feed rabbits who have a very different digestive system. The same hey that you feed your cow's sheep and goats. Without knowing that you also need to supplement those with minerals and vitamins and other things than just hey, if you want quality production, especially for nursing, pregnant or actively growing animals.
At least, if you want decent, fat content and meat that tastes good. And also meat that was happy while it was alive!
