On January 25, 1976, Ugandan President Idi Amin hosted lavish public celebrations in Kampala and Entebbe to mark the fifth anniversary of the military coup that brought him to power in 1971. The event served as a major platform for Amin to demonstrate his domestic authority and project military strength to both local citizens and international observers. Several prominent foreign dignitaries attended the festivities, including President Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire, President Jean-Bedel Bokassa of the Central African Republic, and President William Tolbert of Liberia. The official proceedings featured extensive military parades, tribal dance performances at Entebbe Airport, and an aerial display involving aircraft. During the anniversary proceedings, Amin showcased his army and reaffirmed his political standing, having also assumed the role of Organization of African Unity chairman the previous year. The public spectacles were designed to project confidence and unity despite underlying economic instability and widespread international criticism of his regime. Behind the grand parades and visiting heads of state, Uganda was grappling with severe economic degradation following the expulsion of South Asian residents in 1972 alongside increasing political repression. The fifth anniversary celebrations stood as one of the peak symbolic displays of Amin's regime before subsequent major events later that year, including the Entebbe airport raid in July 1976.
