@goodbyeapathy: But if you do have specifics about what exactly transplants do that isn't very NYC of them... would be interested in those. #nyc #writer #transplants #newyorkcity #nyclife
There’s a guy going around peeling off all the stickers and painting the green mailboxes 🫠😒

the Architecture. it's sterile and flat now. The older buildings feel more loved and the workmanship shows that.

The native NY accent has changed. Most of the kids born here within the last ten years sound like they’re from Ohio.

for me. it's the trees. there are FAR less trees in NYC then there used to be. for example, I grew in red hook projects. Just about every walk way and sidewalk was tree lined. full canopies in someplaces. now almost nothing. it's sad.

There are so many places from my youth/teenage years that aren't around any more. St Mark's, abc no Rio (although it's coming back), Funtime USA, 5pointz. There used to be punk shows in LES regularly now it feels so dry. There aren't as many opportunities for street art. The character of the city feels like it's been lost.

Neighborhoods don’t feel like neighborhoods anymore. Everyone knew my mom and she knew about my first cigarette before I even got home. My kids have grown up anonymously. I still live here though.

The culture of the city feels like it’s eroded. Block parties, cultural events at what used to be Shea Stadium, shopping in SoHo, day parties, nightlife in NYC used to be top tier. Gentrification has given us a swift kick in the ass. I miss when you could get a basement apartment for 1k.

Affordable and quality pizza places. We can chalk it up to inflation sure, but it used to be that you could get a quality and affordable slice almost anywhere. Plus shops have been opening up where they “proudly” don’t do slices for some reason, It’s weird.

I grew up in Park Slope and a lot of the old mainstay businesses of the neighborhood are now real estate offices.

The biggest change I’ve noticed and, in my opinion, probably the one of the major causes of the changes that most people will complain about other than this one, is that people are moving to the city and trying to change it to fit their ideas of what NYC should be from the internet rather than moving here and finding a place that they fit into or can make their own.

St. Marks place used to be so grunge and cool. Now it’s sanitized. Most areas feel like authentic then it used to be… and we’ll never get that back. I’m grateful for feeling safer on the subway compared to when I was in college. My old neighborhood haunts have become ghosts.

Gentrification has ruined the culture. We used to be able to be loud play music on the stoop, BBQ on the sidewalk and feed anybody passing through. Neighborhoods felt like villages where you could let your kids play outside and know the adults were always watching even if it wasn’t your parent.

Restaurants/eateries for locals are gone. Diners, small cafes and family style restaurants are no more. Only spots that cater to tourists, transplants and PE spots

I miss the grittiness. I miss the grassroots hyper-local trends that got sparked in those gritty neighborhoods. I miss the individual/family owned establishments that collectively defined neighborhoods. I miss nyc being weird

Honestly most of it comes back to transplants and private equity, so it’s hard to separate. But less spaces for us to just do us without charging a premium to simply exist. It’s like when you go somewhere, are you going to some hole in the wall place with character, with food you might not be able to get anywhere else, or are you going to Chipotle with it’s stark walls and the same food all over the county from Sysco. They turned us into a Chipotle.

Native LES. Where to start. Lack of culture/erasure of culture. It’s not just transplants, wealthy immigrants also changed the way we feel as a city as well. Lack of good local restaurants not corporate restaurants. Luxury apt buildings that buy up local landlords.
