The only person to drive faster than the speed of sound in a car on land has earned another world record - this time in a hydrogen-powered vehicle. Retired RAF pilot Andy Green reached 406.3mph (653.9kph) in a car powered by two hydrogen internal combustion engines with a combined 1,600 horsepower, comfortably beating the previous record of 303mph set in 2009. The 64-year-old set the record for the vehicle category on Tuesday, according to the international governing body of motor sports. Mr Green raced across Utah’s famous Bonneville Salt Flats in a 32-foot (9.75-meter) car powered be engines that combine pressurised hydrogen gas with air and ignite it to create bursts of power.

"It’s magic to be able to showcase this technology and to showcase how good the engineering is on the best racing surface in the world,” Mr Green said after the challenge. The Bonneville Salt Flats are a prehistoric lakebed, west of Salt Lake City, which attracts drivers from around the world with its low-friction, salt crust surface and dry desert air. Tuesday’s feat didn’t break the overall land-speed record, which Mr Green set with jet power in 1997. That year, he broke the sound barrier in a Thrust SSC — a black needle sandwiched between large jet engines — driving at 763mph (1,227.9kph) in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. In 2006, Mr Green also set the land-speed record for a diesel-powered car — 350.092mph (563.4kph) — at the Bonneville Salt Flats. With a 10-mile (16-km) straight to build speed, he beat that mark using purely hydrogen power, which he has called the “fuel of the future”.
