He really thought a divorce should be “my life exactly as it is just minus a person” while hers should be “the clothes on my back and decades of raising children meaning absolutely nothing”?

I just can't comprehend how in the 21st-century a man gets married and does not understand the concept of marital property or the division of assets in a divorce. What are these men thinking?

Either they’re going to pay someone else to care for your kids NOW or you’re going to pay your wife LATER for staying home and caring for the children. It’s pay now or later but PAY you will.

All the men in the OP comments are all complaining about SAHMs as if they have any idea how much childcare costs.

A pre-nup was available but if men bring this up, women can also put her requirements in there, as well. Many men just wish they could get the free labour for 20 years & not have it cost them anything.

Somebody did the math once, a homemaker or sahm does like the equivalent of a quarter million dollars worth of labor every year for free

Did anyone else do the math on this? They have been married 20 (or assuming oldest was born in wedlock 23+ years) he/they have made 12 years of payment, and he saved for 10 years.... except he was married to her for at minimum 8 of those ten years, so he didn't eat beans and rice, they did.
Also given she was home with the kids where did the 4% she contributed come from? Did she have a part time job? has she been working the whole time, but her income doesn't count because it isn't as much as his???
I wonder who paid for food and clothing and things for the kids...

So they had 3 kids under 5 at one point that she took care of. The cost of daycare for 3 kids under 5 would have been about 3-4k a month. Lets calculate the cost of daycare for three kids for 5-6 years, then after school care for 3 kids for 6 years. Then the transportation to activities, food prep and cleaning costs. THAT is the contribution and 100s of thousands.

These discussions drive me nuts because if someone isn’t earning money they don’t see their contributions as work or effort. A woman staying home with kids is a sacrifice. She is sacrificing her retirement, her career, her ability to re enter the work force if things go downhill…the list goes on. Does it suck to have to split everything equally? Yes but it’s the least that can be done for someone who is sacrificing as well and not getting a paycheck for it.

If he didn’t agree to have a stay at home wife and mother, I’m sure she would have gone for a career. Then he wants a divorce and her sacrifices and contributions in the marriage suddenly don’t count?

I can see pre-nups &/or contracts being an absolute necessity in the future if men want children. Being out of the paid work-force for 6-12 (or more)years to raise kids & run the household, including doing for him, is very costly for a woman. Lost wages, seniority, retirement savings.......Men aren't going to enjoy having to compensate women in this way, either. 🇨🇦

I'm a retired SAHM and have some advice for anyone looking to become the stay at home parent. the out of home partner needs to respect the in home persons contribution before you ever leave the paid workforce. you also need to plan for retirement and a plan if you want to separate at some point. DO NOT leave the paid workforce if you don't have a partner that sees the value of your contribution. like everything in a healthy relationship, communication is beyond important.

I'm all for SAHM but after the kids are in school, you gotta get back to work. having your own money and ypur own retirement ensures you're beholden to no man. Give a man the power to feed ypu ypu also give him the power to starve you. While getting the house is great, if ypu don't jave the money to pay the taxes its just a bigger burden.

The assets would’ve been split 50/50 regardless of whether the wife worked outside the home or not. 🤷♀️That’s how it works. As for the rest- In a lot of these cases, the wife resuming employment once kids are in school wouldn’t have made a big financial difference anyway. Clearly he is a high earner (and most likely her earning potential was lower).

obvs this is a rough estimate but paying off a 1 million dollar house in 12 years means they paid nearly 9k a MONTH just on the mortgage. And he doesn't think she should get anything. What level of greed is this 💀

Boo-who. I am a working mom, sleeping on the floor after being married for 29.5 years because I’m paying my ex-husband alimony of $1,000 a month while getting no child support so he wouldn’t touch my retirement. 2/3 of our kids’ lives, I was a married single mom and he took off for 5.5 years for mental health issues, though I had mental health issues too, but kept working so our kids wouldn’t suffer and we wouldn’t be homeless. He ran up credit cards and messed around with the IRS. I am responsible for the majority of this because I earn more though he didn’t work for a while and I out-earned him for the majority of our marriage.
