@ginha.abaku: Understanding what happened to you and knowing what to do in the moment are two different skill sets. Trauma disrupts both. Processing the past addresses one of them. That’s where DBT comes in. DBT gives you concrete skills for managing difficult emotions, tolerating distress without making it worse, communicating more effectively, and building a stronger relationship with yourself in real time. Not in theory. In the actual moment when everything in you wants to react the way you always have. EMDR helps you process what happened to you. DBT helps you learn what to do with what you feel now. For a lot of survivors, both matter. If you’ve done trauma processing work and still feel like your relationships and your emotional responses aren’t where you want them to be, that’s not a failure of the work you’ve done. It might just mean there’s a different kind of work still ahead. I offer free 15-minute consultations for people who want to figure out if this is the right next step. Link in bio to schedule.
