I remember commenting on that Rosie girls YouTube asking if she was a certified instructor because I didn't want to hurt myself (her form looked sloppy) and she never responded. Someone else responded though with "You can't hurt yourself it's just pilates" 💀 Moving your body with incorrect form repeatedly can't be good in the long run

I am doing pilates to practice my body mind connection and improve my body alignment and posture. I am hyper mobile so it takes a lot for me to have a good form. Really appreciate the instructors who focus on the form instead of rushing through bunch of hard moves to make you feel challenged.

I’m WAY more likely to go back to an instructor that will actually correct my form and not just tell me the steps and let me go on with my day. I want to do it right, tell meeee! Lol

as an instructor id like to add that so many people also view pilates solely as a workout, not as a practice. id be a millionaire if i had a dollar for each time a client purposely does the optional advancements with complete disregard to their form or my cues just because they think itll make them workout “harder”. i can physically correct their form, cue well and break down exercises but at the end of the day so so so many people are choosing not to listen :/

As an instructor the thing I’ve noticed is there are people who want to learn/practice pilates and people who want to do pilates. Those who just want to “do” generally don’t understand the importance of form, control, or precision. I cue consistently and will give direct feedback but alot of the times, unfortunately, they aren’t interested.

THIS it literally burns my skin alive when I see someone flying through an exercise so quickly without any precision. I have to hold back sometimes going to them.

I firmly believe that clients need to do privates first before doing a group class. I can cue so many things on how to do the exercise what they need to do to feel it, and yet they still won’t find the mind body connection bc they’re not even aware of what they’re doing wrong. I cannot correct every single person in a group class. And then those same ppl will be like “oh that was too easy”, like no u were just doing it wrong!!

I was SO invested into doing Pilates properly after my first month (I'm 9 months in) that when I didn't understand a cue or how to actually engage a specific muscle, I would go home, google everything I could in order to understand the movement, go for a walk and practice engaging that muscle as I walked. I had no idea how to engage my glutes or core, I still remember the first time I successfully engaged my glutes while on the reformer. It was like 🤯 But I know most people don't hyperfixate that hard lol

I get annoyed when certain instructors don’t remind me when to breathe lol I finally googled it so I know.

I always appreciated when an instructor would walk up and down the aisle while talking, the ones who stand at the back of the room don’t seem as engaged or able to notice those subtle things that need correcting.

exactly. i teach a classical mat class at a more modern studio. the studio classes rely heavily on demos so a lot of people come in, focusing so much on watching rather than feeling. i’m always reminding them to use their “listening ears” for my cues. to feel really feel it in their body. however, some people just don’t listen despite my verbal and touch cues and i just let them do their thing lol

I feel like I’m doing sloppy Pilates but tbh I don’t blame myself because building that mind body connection is harddd 😭 but I think it’s getting better over time!

omg ya as an instructor i ALWAYS cue proper form before the first rep, stop after the first rep to get everyone to check their form. In between reps i always remind them of alignment and form + correct them. Yet there will always be those who dgaf, dont follow the counting, dont follow the cues and doing whatever tf they please. Like ... pls get out of my class and dont come back. 😫😫😫😫😫😫

What I needed was a physical therapist to help me activate my muscles and build that mind-body connection. The best Pilates instructors can tell us what to do and how it should feel, but if it still isn’t working after a while, there has to be a point where you push toward physical therapy.

How do you deal with clients that add their own layers? I had a beginner class today and I notice 1 person adding their own challenges.. it was annoying because layers are to build up the exercise and it was throwing me off cause I’m watching the rest of the class, assisting where I can and I see 1 person doing her own thing and yes sloppy!!

I think this applies to basically every form of exercise- half my job as a personal trainer with was teaching people how to “feel” the exercise, not just do it

or maybe people are trying to actually grow in their practice 😂 like??? Like it takes time to gain the control required to execute the moves with precision

Small precise movements are so much harder than sloppy movements. If movements are sloppy, they develop bad movement pattern and get injured. Precision over big range.

OMG, I dont have the privelege to attend a class so I rely on Youtube for classes. Im so happy to stumble upon Move With Nicole. She's very good at giving cues and telling you what you should feel and and to work with your breathing. Some people found her quite slow but I like it more because I get to connect my form and breathing to the movement. Its also more peaceful and sharpen my focus☺️❤️

I had to take a million privates bc I got injured many times.. made me realize that most ppl donno how to do things properly even sometimes instructors who trained 😭 so the idea of ‘sloppy pilates’ just seems the norm for most ppl and I don’t blame them pilates isn’t intuitive to me at all!
