@henryfudgeofficial: The least affordable housing market on earth, with inequality at its highest since 1971. So why are Rolexes, horse racing and leveraged stocks all booming in Hong Kong? Watches, bets and leverage aren't three trends. They're one: conspicuous despair. When a home costs 141 years of saving, the long shot becomes the rational move, and looking like belonging replaces the impossible chance of actually arriving. #hongkong #rentierblackhole #economics #inequality #behavioraleconomics
What are the benefits for someone to buy a home in Hong Kong??

As inequality rises, the brands get bigger, the gambles get crazier and the leverage grows. The reference still moves, and the gravity can even drag on your psychology of what you value and how you perceive value. Hong Kong is a real harsh edge case example of that

It seems paradoxical because Hong Kongers are known to look down on mainland Chinese as being tacky and tasteless (big branded logos, overt displays of wealth). Turns out they are the ones more likely to flaunt signs of “wealth” themselves!

A £15k watch in HK isn’t all that plus no one bats an eyelid at a Rolex. People are more frugal than in the west. They work hard, save hard but eat well. Interesting analysis of life there though.

I’ve heard some places allow you to rent luxury fashion for this exact reason like the vision of being rich is as important as actually being rich to people psychologically

Loads of people talk about it being fakes - which could be highly possible but as a HKer, I’d also like to point out Hong Kong doesn’t have the 20% VAT like UK does and the income tax is really low. A month of taxes in the UK could equate a year of taxes in HK. On top of that, loads of people live with family so not paying a TON on rent, personally I think it’s a ‘watches’ instead of ‘lipstick’ economy instead of loads of people buying fakes. The concept of Rolex/expensive watch is quite embedded in the culture that we have Cantonese sayings for it, and it’s kind of quite a popular activity for HKers to fly to Japan to hunt for second hand Rolexes when Yen is cheap..

To be honest, HK has always been about Rolex and flash. Going back decades, this was the Monaco of Asia … that swagger and panache won’t disappear ppl want to look the part it’s in the dna. But I get your perspective.

I worked as a realtor in America. I felt like I was failing as my fellow Realtors were driving Cadillacs wearing Rolex watches and living the dream. then I learnt they lived in a rented flat or mobile home. It was all fake. Perceived image.

To be honest I'm only impressed if someone has a house or 2 in HK, well back to the topic, if a Rolex is cheaper than a house and having a rolex gets you more respect and admiration, then isn't that the trade-off that people want.
