If boomers think triple lock is unfair they need to cut back on spending and work harder

I just don’t see a strong argument for pensions increasing beyond inflation, it isn’t affordable at all

Pensions should have always been tied to wage growth, it would have incentivised the old to vote for wage increases to keep up with inflation because it would be in their interests too.

He’s shifting money from the state pension into an NHS-style free-to-use social care system. It’s economically equivalent to making part of the pension means tested, as those who can afford private social care won’t use the public system.

A publication on social care reform said around 2m pensioners have unmet care needs and 1 in 7 were faced with care bills of £100,000. Yet *POTENTIALLY* reducing the rate of state pension increases to pay for free-at-the—point-of-use social care is a bad thing? What if CPI dwarfs wage growth for 10 years after 2030? They’d still be better off under the double lock AND there’s a long term adjustment to keep it in line with wage growth IF that outpaces CPI or 2.5%.

I am a pensioner and I support the change, but you must admit that the state pension is to low.

Would these people support a triple lock for the minimum wage though?

it's also mathematically unsustainable. it's impossible for pensioners to keep getting bigger increases above those that are getting paid for working.... in an aging population

The way its being done has snookered the right wing. The money is redirected to services FOR older people who need it - the ones losing the triple lock AND a free care service are the ones who never needed any of that anyway 🤣 chefs kiss!

getting rid of the triple lock just as gen x come up to retirement is very suspicious though, it seems they still don't want to upset the boomers

when we get through this extinction burst, lets agree for all countries to share notes on what happened so we can warn future generations

Companies invested in the UK obviously hate the state pension as the UK spending any money anywhere else (even on the military) contributes more to the UK economy than pension increases. All government spending has a return rate to the UK, both back to the exchequer, and towards GDP. Pensioners have the lowest return for both. Anything else helps the UK more, anything, even foreign aid returns more to both.

55% of all out of work benefit are pensions, 1 in 4 of those receiving pensions are property rich (assets over 1mil) If we remove that quarter getting pensions entirely it's a little over 13.5% estimated immediate reduction in overall benefit spend. For further context 24/25 pension spend elwas 138 billion, which is more than; Pip 34bil, housing allowance 15bil, child benefit 13bil, incapacity benefit 12bil, carers allowance 4bil, maternity pay 3bil combined with 57billion to spare.

got into an argument with someone on FB who appeared to be on the baby boomer esque side of the age scale, and their arguments basically boiled down to : Ohh workers might get more than us if its unlinked from wages and that means its a "pension" cut

Its surprised me today seeing how many people who will actually accept the change because it's going to benefit them other ways AND their future family. I thibk its more popular than they want people to know by far.

This does show the underlying issue of younger people need to vote more to get parties to be less stupidly nice to the older generation

There is a bigger picture not being seen here. Firstly, you will all want a pension eventually - if you live that long - but if this goes ahead it will be worth less year on year. Second, if people struggle more, then they just end up needing extra benefits (fuel allowance being obvious one that got brought in), so not the savings you hope for. Thirdly, jobs. Younger people NEED the oldies to bugger off to make the vacancies/promotion opportunities, if pension drops in real terms value year on year, many might hang around. There is more but I’ve written enough for TikTok [Laugh approved]
