The People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), the regular armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), was a conventional military with divisions, artillery, air defense, logistics, and, increasingly after the mid-1960s, armor. Parallel to it in the South operated the National Liberation Front's People's Liberation Armed Forces, often called the Viet Cong in American usage: a mix of local guerrillas and main-force units under Hanoi's strategic direction through organs such as the Central Office for South Vietnam. U.S. and allied reporting, and later scholarship, long debated how cleanly those labels mapped onto the battlefield as northern-born regulars filled southern formations after heavy losses. English-language shorthand that reduces the entire communist war effort to peasant irregulars flattens that structure. Guerrilla tactics, rural recruitment, and village infrastructure were real, especially for southern guerrillas, yet major operations from Ia Drang to the 1972 Nguyen Hue Offensive and the 1975 Ho Chi Minh Campaign depended on PAVN regular formations supplied along the Truong Son corridor (the Ho Chi Minh Trail) with Chinese and Soviet matériel. Anti-aircraft guns, artillery, and tanks were products of state logistics, not cottage improvisation alone. Distinguishing PAVN regulars from southern guerrillas does not minimize Vietnamese agency or the political war for rural control. It restores the institutional fact that Washington faced both an insurgency and a state army backed by industrial patrons. The outcome of the Second Indochina War cannot be explained by guerrilla improvisation alone. Recognizing PAVN as a state army clarifies logistics, attrition, and why rural-farmer slogans mislead more than they describe. https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/docs/CIA-RDP79T00826A000500010062-2.pdf https://history.army.mil/html/books/090/90-26-1/CMH_Pub_90-26-1.pdf https://www.archives.gov/research/military/vietnam-war #History #historymemes #historytok #vietnamwar #militaryhistory
