@zara_leex: Pennhurst’s darkest stories aren’t about ghosts… they’re about what happened to the people who lived there. 🕯️ Opened in Pennsylvania in 1908, Pennhurst State School was created to house people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over time, it became severely overcrowded and understaffed—and conditions inside deteriorated dramatically. Court records would later document filthy and unsafe living conditions, prolonged restraints and seclusion, physical abuse, sexual assault, and the use of psychotropic medication to control behavior. In one documented case from 1972, an 11-year-old child died after becoming strangled while restrained to a chair. Court findings also described a resident who spent approximately 720 hours restrained during a single month. Journalists, families, and disability-rights advocates eventually helped expose what was happening behind Pennhurst’s walls. The lawsuits that followed became part of a major fight over the rights and treatment of people with disabilities in America. Pennhurst finally closed in 1987. Today, the property is surrounded by stories of apparitions, screams, footsteps, and shadow figures. But Pennhurst doesn’t need a ghost story to make its history horrifying. The truth is dark enough. #D#DarkHistoryP#PennhurstP#PennhurstStateSchoolP#PennhurstAsylumP#PennsylvaniaHistory
