The V was not a slogan, a poster or a speech. It was a shape a nation could make with its own hand, on a factory floor, in a queue, from a doorway, without saying a word. A country that can perform its own belief keeps believing. In the video I run through a few of these, including the one Trump uses. They are symbolic gestures, and they work differently from everything else your hands do. An emphasis gesture supports the sentence you are saying now. A symbolic gesture carries meaning on its own, detached from any sentence, which is why it survives the speech, the room and often the speaker. Here is the part that matters if you speak for a living. Symbolic gestures are not invented on the day. They are repeated until the audience does the work. The first time it is a hand movement. The tenth time it is shorthand. The fiftieth time it belongs to them more than it belongs to you, and they use it when you are nowhere near the room. Most speakers never get there because they vary everything. New talk, new movements, nothing repeated, nothing to hold on to. Variety feels like effort. Repetition is what builds recognition. So pick the single idea you want to be known for. Not your whole message, one idea. Give it a shape simple enough to copy while holding a coffee, then use it every time that idea comes up, for a year. After twenty three years I can tell you the speakers who get quoted are rarely the most eloquent. They are the most consistent.
