The San and Khoekhoen were among the earliest peoples of the region. Over centuries, different Bantu-speaking African societies became established across southern Africa, including the ancestors of many people who are today Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, Pedi, Venda, Ndebele and others. Then came European settlers. The Dutch established a settlement at the Cape in 1652. Enslaved people were also brought from parts of Africa and Asia, while later British migration and other movements added further layers to the population. And the political country called the Union of South Africa was only created in 1910, by bringing together the Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Orange Free State. So let's be careful with the word “foreigner.” A person whose ancestors migrated centuries ago is not automatically a foreigner today. But neither can anyone honestly pretend that modern South Africa has always consisted of one single people with one uninterrupted national identity. South Africa has a complex history of indigenous peoples, migration, African kingdoms and societies, European colonisation, forced migration, slavery and political union. That is history.
